MENTA H. COURTNEY

Menta H. Courtney, 99, of Whiting, Iowa, died Monday, October 26, 1987, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Whiting, Iowa, after a long illness.

She was born October 9, 1888, in Mohawk, Tennessee, to William A. and Ida Belle (Claire) Hale, and came to Monona County in 1904. She worked as a young girl for the Willard Whiting family. On March 9, 1910, she married Jess J. Courtney in rural Onawa. The couple made their home on a farm near Whiting, until moving into Whiting in 1950. He died November 13, 1960, in Whiting.

She was the oldest living member of the First Congregational UCC, was a member of women’s groups in the church, and a charter member of Whiting Congenial Country Club, all of Whiting. She was a past matron of Whiting Chapter Order of Eastern Star and a present member of Queen Esther Order of Eastern Star Chapter #222 of Onawa. She traveled with Eastern Star groups to the Holy Land, part of Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and parts of South America.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Enoch (Helen) Oie of Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, Robert of Whiting; one brother, G. R. Hale of Lovington, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Mrs. Darrel (Bonnie) Parsley of Sergeant Bluff and Robert J. A. Courtney of Ft. Dodge, Ia.; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, and four sisters.

Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 1987, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ at Whiting with Rev. James Stroh officiating. The organist, Mrs. E. B. Matthews, accompanied the vocalist, Gilbert Smith, in the selections “What A Friend We Have in Jesus” and “I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked”.

Honorary Bearers were Ted Carlson, E. B. Matthews, A. L. Clinkenbeard, J. N. Hopkins, Wayne Carlson and Leo Hall.

Active Bearers were Wesley Miller, Leland Allen, Maurice Brenden, Vincent Willey, Ervin Mander and Loran Parrish.

Interment was in Harrison Cemetery at Whiting with arrangements by the Pearson, Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
