JULIE MARIE SMITH

Julie Marie Smith, 37 years, 3 months and 2 days, of Castana died Sunday in a hospital in Omaha of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Turin.

Mrs. Smith, the former Julie Christiansen, was born May 28, 1950, in Sioux City and graduated from Maple Valley High School in 1968. She then worked for the Sioux City Transit Co.

She married Clark Smith, March 29, 1969, in Mapleton. They moved to Cherokee where she worked at Hope’s Fashion Farm and was secretary for Jesse’s Fine Meats and later Pampered Beef, both of Cherokee. In 1974 they moved to rural Castana. She worked for Dubuque Pack in Denison and presently was a physical therapist assistant at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran church and was a Sunday School teacher helper.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Eric and Peter, both at home; her parents, Robert and Evelyn Christiansen of Mapleton; a brother, Bruce of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Joan) Valdez of Amarillo, Texas; and maternal grandfather, Glen Wiig of Sergeant Bluff.

Preceding her in death were her paternal grandparents and maternal grandmother.

Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew Lutheran church in Mapleton. The Rev. Les Kimball officiated. Organist was Mrs. Hazel Bruning with congregational singing “In the Garden”, “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “How Great Thou Art”.

Pallbearers were Larry Lamb, Wayne Gosch, Rick Blume, Doug Thelander, Dennis Namanny and Mark Horsley.

Burial was in Kennebec Cemetery in Castana.
