KENNETH R. SCHMITT

Kenneth R. Schmitt, Sr., Little Sioux, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 13, 1987, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa following a stroke. Death came at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 15 days.

He was born on August 29, 1905, at Mercer, North Dakota, the son of Matt and Mary (Hobbs) Schmitt. He married Lillian Solomon on January 25, 1936, at Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He served with the U.S. Army in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. He was an inspector with the Army Corps of Engineers for 32 years and had worked in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Missouri and California, before retiring in 1965. The couple moved to Little Sioux in 1952.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian, of Little Sioux; a son, Kenneth R. Schmitt, Jr. of Little Sioux; two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Bannister of San Diego, Calif. and Mrs. Vic (Viola) Myers of Griswold, Ia.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 17, 1987, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel, Onawa, with Rev. Donald Stoll officiating. Mrs. Jack Jordan, the organist, accompanied the soloist, Mrs. Donald Stoll, in the selections “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” and “The Lord’s Prayer”.

Bearers were Roy Breeling, Lynn Riley, Martin Evenson, Jack Vipond, Augustus Hanson and Merle Olson.

Interment was in the Little Sioux Cemetery at Little Sioux, Iowa, with Graveside Military Flag Presentation by Ernest Caldwell. Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
