PARK W. MOORHEAD

Park W. Moorhead, 86, for many years a livestock feeder and farmer at Moorhead, Iowa, died April 12, 1987, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

He was born May 26, 1900, in the old “Brick” home located at Moorhead to George Howorth and Clara Walford Moorhead. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1917 and then attended Iowa State University and Morningside College where he graduated in 1922. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

He was united in marriage to Edna Marion Bekins on August 30, 1922. He had resided in the Moorhead community his entire life, but for the past 22 years he had spent the winters in the Rio Grande Valley at the couple’s winter home at Weslaco, Texas.

Park had been active in community and public life. He was a member of the Moorhead Christian Church where he was currently serving as an elder. He was a 63-year member of Elk Lodge #586 A.F & A. M., a 63-year Charter member of Moorhead Chapter #528 Order of Eastern Star, a member of Sioux City Consistory and Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City; and a 60-year member of Peter A. Hansen American Legion Post #365 in Moorhead. He was instrumental in establishing Preparation Canyon State Park at Moorhead and was a past alumni representative on the Board of Trustees of Morningside College. He served on the Moorhead School Board for 24 years and was a member of the Selective Service Board during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Edna, of Moorhead; a daughter, Mrs. Arlo (Barbara) Kladstrup of Bella Vista, Ark.; a son, John, of Moorhead; a sister, LaVonne Martin of Omaha, Nebr.; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Rosemary Moorhead Blaine; and a brother, Wilbur Page Moorhead.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 1987, at the Moorhead Christian Church, Moorhead, Iowa, with Rev. John McGee officiating. The organist, Mrs. Charles Kratz, played “How Great Thou Art” and “In the Garden”.

Casket bearers were Byron Mesenbrink, Juhl Hansen, Ray Hoffman, Darrell Wessell, Keith Hieber and Richard Grefe.

Interment was in the Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa, with Masonic Graveside Services by Elk Lodge #586 A.F. & A.M., Moorhead, Iowa, Worshipful Master, Ronald Nichols and Orator, George Weed.

Arrangements were by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
