Dorothy Ann Wise, 85, died Jan. 22 in Mapleton. Dorothy was born July 5, 1928, at Ida Grove, Iowa, the eldest child of Henry Gehrke, Jr. and Anna (Siebold) Gehrke. She grew up at Oto, Iowa and graduated from Oto High School with the class of 1947. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City where she received her teaching certificate and taught country school for three years, at Midway, Anthon, and Ticonic. She continued to teach as a substitute teacher for several years.

During high school, Dorothy and Loren “Pat” Wise became high school sweethearts. They were wed January 31, 1948, at the Climbing Hill Lutheran Church by Pastor Walter Kirk. Together, they embraced the gift of 66 years of marriage. After working with her husband on the farm and supporting him in his interstate and international logging business, they retired in 2006, had their farm sale and moved to Mapleton.

Dorothy enjoyed knitting and ventured into a short time of golfing. Together, Dorothy and Pat loved to camp for many years with friends in their camping club, Siouxland Sams, based out of Sioux City. They also shared good times with some of these same friends the 20 years they wintered in southern Texas. The greatest joy, however, in Dorothy’s life, was the time spent with her family, especially her four grandsons when they were little boys.

Survivors left to hold Dorothy’s memory in their hearts are her husband, Pat; one daughter and her husband, Chris and Keith McCall of Fort Worth, Texas; one son, Dennis Wise of Mapleton, Iowa; four grandsons, Jeffrey McCall of Arlington, Texas, Michael McCall and his wife, Michelle of Fort Worth, Texas, and Jamie and Jody Wise both of Sioux City, Iowa; one sister and her husband, Charlotte and Melvin Maynard of Denver, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen Watt and Betty Fletcher; and two brothers, Don and Jim Gehrke.

Funeral Service was held Monday, Jan. 27, 10 a.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Mapleton, with Pastor Brian McNamara, officiating.

Pallbearers were Dennis Wise, Jamie Wise, Keith McCall, Gary LeFebvre, Kenny Kollbaum, Danny Ronfeldt.

Message in Music was by Mary Joan Dougherty, pianist, and included congregational singing of “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 26, after 4 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home, Mapleton.

Interment was at Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland.

Everyone attending was invited and encouraged to return to the church following the interment for a time of sharing food and memories.
