Leonard Floyd Shipley, the son of George and Ella (Estep) Shipley was born August 19, 1899, at Battle Creek and moved with his family to Ute in 1901, and remained here all his life. He graduated from the Ute High School in 1916 and then enlisted in the Army where he served from January 1918 to September 1919. He was stationed in the Philippines.

He married Goldie Thompson, July 15, 1922, at Lake View, Iowa. He was a rural mail carrier for 41 years, retiring in 1962.

Floyd died Monday, March 9, 1987, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa, of an apparent heart attack, having reached the age of 87 years, 6 months and 20 days.

He was a Veteran of World War I. Floyd was a member of the Christian Church where he was a past Chairman of the Board and past Deacon. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Loyalty Lodge 598 AF & AM of Ute, a member of the Sioux City Consistory; charter and 50-year member of Aaby Post 442, American Legion. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Ute Chapter 436 and Rural Mail Carriers Association. He was a former Volunteer Fireman and past member of the Ute School Board.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie; a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Hanson of Ute; three sons, Glenn of Orange, Calif.; Ned of Omaha, Nebr.; and Eugene of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Mahler of Ute and Mrs. Madge Dorscher of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister and one great granddaughter.

Services were held Thursday, March 12, 1987, at 10:00 a.m., Christian Church, Ute, Ia., with Pastor Mark Smeltzer officiating. Organist was Mrs. Arlene Schelm. Military graveside rites were conducted by Aaby Post 442, American Legion.

Pallbearers were David Shipley, Jack Moore, Francis Thompson, Scott Hanson, Robert Kruger and Warren Thompson.

Interment was in St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Ia. with Walter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
