H. R. “DICK” SMITH

H. R. “Dick” Smith, Castana, Iowa, died on January 27, 1987, in Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Death came at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 4 days.

He was born at Dunlap, Iowa, on April 23, 1908, the son of Richard and Belle (Harris) Smith. On September 26, 1929, he married Eileen Ballantyne at Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Moorhead area and later at Bemidji and Pine City, Minnesota, for nine years. They returned to Moorhead in 1943 where he was a heavy equipment operator for Monona County for six years. In 1953 they moved to Castana and farmed until retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Dunlap Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen, of Castana; a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Collett of Mitchell, S. D.; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Harold Smith, Jr., and Dawaine Emery Smith, and one brother, Earl.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 30, 1987, at the Castana Community Church, Castana, Iowa, with Rev. Richard Hempenius officiating. The organist was Mrs. Paul Petersen, Jr. and Mrs. Brady Hanson and Mrs. Harvey Hanson sang “One Day At A Time” and “The Lord Knows Why”.

Honorary bearers were Maurice Jensen, Cleo Melby, Wilbur J. Mock, Samuel Mann, Edwin L. Miller and Neal Kirkpatrick.

Casket bearers were Brady Hanson, Russell Davis, Roger Melby, Warren Johnston, Harvey Hanson and Bill Mathison, Jr.

Interment was in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
