23 May 2013Dr. Fred Willman, 72, of St. Louis, Mo., passed away April 17, at a rehab center near his home following a 10 year battle with cancer.
Fred Willman was born Sept. 26, 1940, in Rodney, the youngest child of Kenneth and Lucille Willman. He grew up in Rodney, attended the school in Rodney during his elementary years, and then graduated from Smithland High School. Dr. Willman received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Morningside College, a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado, and a PH.D. in Teacher Education from the University of North Dakota.
During Dr. Willman’s career he first taught general and choral music in Iowa public schools. While he was a member of the faculty at the University of North Dakota, he conducted teacher training programs with Native Americans. In 1977 he joined the music faculty of the University of Missouri – St. Louis, where he became a Founders Professor of Music and Education, Coordinator of Music Education, Director of Graduate Studies in Music, and Coordinator of Music Technology.
Recognized for innovative curriculums for elementary and middle school general music methods courses, his publications include journal articles, two solely authored books, nine jointly authored textbooks, choral music , and computer software. Dr. Willman served on two national music task forces and was a member of several professional organizations. He was frequently engaged as a presenter at national, regional, state, and local music conferences and has served as a resource consultant and clinician for many school districts in the Midwest.
Those left to cherish their memories are his sister, Ruth Willman Stidger of Dallas, Texas, and two nieces, Susan Saylor of Parsippany, N.J., and Ellen Podell of Wanatah, Ind.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lucille Willman.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
