MAPLETON, Iowa | Ethel E. Gosch, 94, of Mapleton passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton following a short illness.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Rev. Harvey Hanson officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.

Ethel Eileen Gosch was born on Sept. 29, 1918, in Woodbine, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Alta (Poe) Atkins. She was raised in Woodbine, where she went to school and graduated from Woodbine High School with the class of 1935. She also completed normal training qualifying her to teach country school for a time.

She married Vernon J. Gosch on Nov. 25, 1937. To this union five children were born. Vernon passed away in January 1971. Ethel was a farmer's wife until 1959, when they moved to Mapleton. She worked in Mapleton at Tierney Drug, the Wagon Wheel, and cleaned the Ganzhorn Medical Clinic. She and Vernon operated the Maple Motel in the absence of the owners. After her husband passed away, Ethel worked a number of years at Zenith Company in Sioux City and at Maple Heights Nursing Home for 20 years, retiring in 1997.

She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton. She enjoyed reading hundreds of books, dancing, crossword puzzles, going to the Senior Citizen Center and playing cards. Her family was her pride and joy.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Lu Zetta and Robert Sparks of Palm Desert, Calif.; a son, Robert Gosch and JoAnn of Smithland, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Delores Gosch of Mapleton; a daughter-in-law, Jean Gosch of West Valley City, Utah; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother and his wife, Ray M. and Kate Atkins of Fairborn, Ohio.

Along with her husband, Vernon J. Gosch, Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Alta Atkins; two sons, Verylnn and Ronald Gosch; a daughter, Alta Blackman and her husband, Bob; a daughter-in-law, Barb Gosch; a sister, Darlene Steckelberg and her husband, Vernon; two great-grandsons, Tyler Gosch and Michael Gosch; and one great-granddaughter, Bayleigh Rae Rowland.
