Lawrence William Bartels was born March 1, 1918, the son of Willam A. and Alma Mohr Bartels. He passed away Monday, Sept. 3, at the Denison Care Center in Denison at the age of 94.

Lawrence was born in Ute. He attended country school near his home. On Nov. 9, 1938, Lawrence was united in marriage to LaRue Bielenberg at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. The couple farmed for several years and were blessed with the birth of six children.

Lawrence worked for Crawford County Road Department for five years, and also the City of Schleswig and Schleswig Lumber in Schleswig. He drove school bus for Schleswig Schools for nine years, ran Bartels Bakery for 10 years; was the janitor at Immanuel Lutheran Church; and managed the Schleswig Community Building and the Schleswig Golf Course before he retired. Lawrence enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and dancing.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, LaRue in 1990; two sisters, Helene and Esther; and son-in-law, Linus. Survivors include three sons: Robert and his wife, Carolyn; Larry and his wife, Cindy; and Dennis and his wife, Beth; three daughters: Dorothy; Patricia and her husband, Craig; and Deborah and her husband, Chris; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara; his best friend, Christine; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 7, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and graveside rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Garden of Good Shepherd, in Denison. Organist Marlene Hight provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, “Rock Of Ages,” “Amazing Grace,” “I’m But A Stranger Here,” and “Abide With Me.” Serving as Pallbearers were Ronald Amunson, Lyle Bielenberg, Virgil Bielenberg, Raymond Frerichs, Dale Frerichs, and Phil Ketelsen.

The family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and lunch provided by Staleys and the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.
