11 December 1896

At Mapleton, Iowa, Tuesday morning, December 8, 1896, of dropsy, Rachel E., wife of Mr. C. H. Simmons, aged 51 years, 9 months and 10 days.

The demise of Mrs. Simmons came not unexpectedly, as she had lain near death's door for the past several weeks, suffering greatly, though patiently awaiting the summons. The deceased was born at Bansfield, Ohio, Feb. 28, 1845, and came to this county with her husband in 1872, locating at old Mapleton, and has since resided either there or in this place. She was the mother of five children, three sons and two daughters, of which two sons have preceded her to the great beyond. The remaining children are W. A. Simmons, Mrs. B. D. Butler and Mrs. Jno. Buckio, who with the husband and father, on whose shoulders the cycle of time is beginning to bear heavily, are enshrouded with sorrow at their loss of a loving wife and fond mother.

Funeral services were conducted from the Episcopal Church, Wednesday afternoon by Rev. W. H. Frost, and a large concourse of friends and neighbors listened to his touching words during the impressive ceremonies which were elaborated with beautiful floral tributes. The remains
were laid to rest in Heisler cemetery.
