Eugene Carl Powell, son of Squire and Nettie Muckey Powell, was born April 27, 1904 at Mapleton. He was the eighth child in a family of ten. He resided in Mapleton for about 20 years and attended school in Mapleton. He then moved to Sioux City, where he lived for 11 years.

While living in Sioux City he had the misfortune of being injured in a ditch cavein. He was confined to a Cherokee hospital where he spent the last 20 years of his life. He died Wednesday, Feb., 29, 1956 at a Cherokee Hospital at the age of 51 years, 10 months and 2 days.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Virginia Pierson of Sioux City, Mrs. Phillis Johnson of Sioux City, Mrs. Betty Headley of St. Joseph, Mo., and Lois Powell of Kansas City, Mo., one son, Merlin Powell of Sioux City; four sisters, Mrs. Geneva Baker of Sioux City, Mrs. Mae Gries of Onawa, Mrs. Irene Heisler of Sioux City, and Mrs. Evelyn Springsteel of Fullerton, Calf., four brother's John of Mapleton, Gerold of Sioux City, Russell of Sioux City and Nelson of San Leandro, Calif.; and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one brother.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at the Byers-Walter chapel in Mapleton. Rev. George Osborn officiated.

Burial was in the Heisler cemetery at Mapleton. Pallbearers we Grant Zediker, Lewis Leisinger, Lawrence Wessllng, Paul Albertson, Nick Thomas and Harold Jensen.
