Death of Grandma Muckey

Mary A. Kelley was born March 17, 1829, in Canada, and died at her home adjoining Mapleton on August 2, 1912, at the ripe old age or 83 years, 4 months and 18 days.

When 9 years old, her parents moved to the United States and settled in Wisconsin, where in 1815 she was married to Joseph Muckey.

In 1861 they came to Iowa and settled in Monona county, taking as a homestead the piece of land where she spent her remaining days, a good part of which is now within the corporate limits of Mapleton the house being just south of the Milwaukee tracks.

Eleven children were born to their union and in 1869 the husband died leaving the wife to be both father and mother to the family a duty which she bravely took up and performed well.

Nine of those have lived to raise families of their own and two of them have passed away within the last ten months Margaret Wilsey last October (her husband Nelson A. Wilsey last April) and Orlando Muckey just one month ago.

Her surviving children are Mrs. Mary Ann Bouslaugh, Castana, Peter Muckey, Harrison, S. D., Mrs. Rosilla Ball, Walthill, Neb., Marks Muckey, Tabor, S. D., Henry and Clark Muckey of Mapleton. Those who preceded their mother to the other world were, Mia. S. E. Lewis, Mrs. N. A. Wilsey and Orlando Muckey. All her living children were at bedside when she passed away.

Others who attended the funeral from out of town were: Mrs. Edna Gillett and John Wilsey of White Lake. S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bail of Wraith, Neb.; and Mrs. Ida Smith, of Sioux City.

Having lived on the same spot for fifty-one years, Mrs. Muckey was one of the very oldest residents of Mapleton and vicinity, if not the oldest in length of residence.

She was respected honored and loved by those who knew her. The family record in one of the most remarkable ever chronicled as she leaves to mourn her loss seven children, sixty-one grandchildren, one hundred and fourteen great- grandchildren, and eight great-great- grandchildren in all 190 immediate descendants.

The services, conducted by Pastor Geo. W. Ladd, were held in the beautiful grove in front of the house where she had spent much of her life, and were attended by a great concourse of people after which she was laid to rest in Heisler cemetery.
