20 June 2012Dorothy Dean Dougherty was born in Mapleton on March 20, 1921, the daughter of Ellsworth and Anna Harriet (Parks) Dean.
Dorothy served in the U.S. Coast Guard from November 23, 1943, until March 2, 1944. She went to college in New Jersey and completed her teaching degree in Iowa. Dorothy loved teaching and taught school in multiple communities eventually retiring from teaching at Danbury Catholic School in Danbury. She often felt compelled to correct people on their use of the English language but tried to do so in a polite manner.
Casino gambling brought Dorothy happiness, especially in her later years as her health declined. She was a dear friend to the circle of people in her life.
Dorothy was a member of the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton.
Survivors include a step daughter, JoAnn Richardson of Florida and her daughter, Susan Steely and her husband, Ken and their children, Sophia and Lucas; two nephews and their wives, Charles and Jeanne Dean of Castana and James C. and Kathy Dean of Brighton, Colo. and their children, Alinda, Melissa, and Mark; two nieces, Kathy Dean of California and Ellen Meekins of Sioux City; and three great-nieces, Shelly Jordan and her husband, Brandon of Los Banos, Calif. and their children, Scott, Zachary, and Michael, Charlesa Dean and Leonard of Castana and children, Nathaniel and Chris, and Regina Duran and her husband, Jesse of Los Banos, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Archie, Charles, Adrian, and Lloyd; and two sisters, Frances and Harriet.
Memorials may directed in Dorothy’s name to the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 or the American Cancer Society.
