Carol Lee Kinney died July 30 in Mapleton at the age of 90 years, 1 month, 15 days. She was born June 15, 1922, in Mapleton, the daughter of Henry Albert and Doris Augusta (Booth) Cook.

She grew up in the Mapleton area and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1941. She then attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., and transferred to Morningside College in Sioux City where she received her teaching certificate. Carol taught country school in Holly Springs, Climbing Hill, Smithland, and Mapleton.

Carol was united in marriage to Paul Revere Kinney Jan. 5, 1954, in Phoenix, Ariz. Paul and Carol farmed on their farm five miles east of Mapleton. They continued to farm until selling it in 1965 and moving in to Mapleton. Paul passed away July 27, 1999.

Carol was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton where she also served with Methodist Women’s Society and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and was involved with the Rainbow Girls.

Carol is survived by her loving daughter, Paula Kinney of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Along with her husband, Carol was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tom Sawyer.

Funeral Service was Friday, Aug. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Pastor Brian McNamara officiating. Message in Music was by Marie Whiteing, organist, with congregational singing of “Jesus Loves Me,” “Leaning On The Everlasting Arm,” and “Just As I Am.”

Visitation was Thursday, Aug. 2, from 5-7 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. The “Handful of Weeds” by The Browns was played on compact disc during this time. Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton.

Everyone was invited and encouraged to return to the church for a time of sharing food and fellowship following the interment at the cemetery.

Armstrong Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
