James R. Hammond, only child of Margaret O’Neil and James C. Hammond, was born in Mapleton, Iowa, May 7, 1901. He died December 29, 1963, at Santa Monica, California, at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 22 days. He had been involved in a traffic accident several weeks earlier.

He spent his childhood in Mapleton, where he graduated from high school, after which he attended a business college in Chillicothe, Mo. He owned and operated a confectionery store in Mapleton for several years before moving to California in 1941. He had been a faithful employee of The May Company in Los Angeles, California, for the last nineteen years.

He was affiliated with the First Presbyterian church of Santa Monica, which he attended regularly. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and a veteran of World War II and had retained his membership in the Loren Hollister American Legion Post of Mapleton. He was a past member of the Mapleton fire department.

Numerous cousins are his closest surviving relatives, among them being Mrs. Margaret Duxbury, Mrs. Nevin Putnam and Mrs. Elizabeth Durst.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1964, at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton. Rev Byron Ayers, pastor of the Mapleton Methodist church, officiated. Interment was at Heisler cemetery at Mapleton. Graveside military services were conducted by the Mapleton American Legion Post.

Pallbearers who are members of Quarry Lodge No 404 A.F.& A.M. of Mapleton were, John Welch, Charles Griffin, Paul Kinney, Francis Chamberlin, Kirk Bennett and Lawrence Cameron.
