Funeral is Held for J.C. Hammond
Former Mayor, Who Died Suddenly July Fourth,
Buried in Mapleton

With a large crowd in attendance funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon for James C "Jim" Hammond. 73 years old, a former mayor of Mapleton who died suddenly of heart failure in the family home on South Fourth Street Friday morning.

Rev Edward Pruitt, pastor of the Methodist church, was in charge of services at the home Officers of Quarry lodge of the Masons officiated at the grave in Heisler cemetery Pallbearers were C F Griffin, W A. Proctor, Julius Halboth, William Babl, John Schleis, Sr. and George A Rice.

Former Mayor Hammond fell while piling wood in the basement of his home several days before his death. He was not injured, however, as far as he knew, although he complained of not feeling well and his left side ached at times.

Friday morning—the Fourth of July—he arose early, shaved, put out the American flag in front of his home and then sat down in a chair in the house. Mrs. Hammond heard him coughing, she rushed to his side, his heart had stopped, death had taken him without warning.

Born on a farm in Perry County, Ohio, September 22, 1856 James Chrysaustin Hammond moved with his parents when young to Lancaster, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. In the spring of 1882 he came to Mapleton to attend to the improvement of lands owned by his father.

On September 28, 1892 he was married to Miss Margaret O’Neil. At that time he was associated in the drug business with Dr. J.W. Cox. A year later he sold the drug store and moved to a farm near Ute where he resided for three years. Selling his farm, he purchased a hardware store at Battle Creek which he operated for a year, retaining his residence in Mapleton. After returning here he took an active part in the development of the telephone business here.

In recent years he retired from active business, devoting his time to the management of his personal interests and to the affairs of the town of Mapleton.

Mr. Hammond always was interested in public and political affairs. He was a member of the Democratic Party He served one term as a deputy sheriff of Monona County and In 1900 was elected councilman, he served for 10 consecutive years. Later he was elected mayor and in 1922 he was again chosen mayor and served continuously until this spring when he was defeated by W J Haubrich after a record of 20 years in public office in Mapleton

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Hammond, one son, James R Hammond of Mapleton, two sisters, Mrs. Rose Donavan and Mrs. Millie Evans, both of Lancaster, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews and other relatives by marriage.

Mr. Hammond was a member of several fraternal orders, including the Masons, and was widely known for his political activates and his promotion of the municipal electric light plant In Mapleton.
