Former Resident Of Mapleton Passed Away Thursday
Harrison W. Groves for many years a resident of Cooper Township and a citizen of Mapleton later, died at the home of his son, Charles H. Groves in Nebraska City, Nebraska on Thursday June 22, at about the noon hour. Regarding Mr. Groves the Nebraska City Press says the following.
H.W. Groves a resident of Nebraska City for twenty-two years and known to the school children of the city as the genial janitor of the high school, died this morning at 11:30 at the home of his son, Charles Groves, Twelfth street and Tenth Avenue, following and illness of about six weeks. His condition had been serious for the past few days, and his death was not unexpected.
He suffered a stroke of paralysis the early part of May and never fully recovered his condition grew gradually weaker until he lapsed into a state of coma several days ago.
Born October 14, 1852, in Ohio, he came west to Mapleton, Iowa, where he lived until he moved to Nebraska City in February 1900. He was a carpenter by trade but for the past few years had been janitor of the Nebraska City High School. He took great pride in keeping the grass on the high school lawn in condition and it is due to his efforts that the grounds surrounding the building make such an attractive appearance.
His wife died in May, 1909, Mr. Groves was married again to Mrs. Lona Galiani several years ago who survives him, with a brother and the following children, Mrs. J.H. Porter, Mapleton, Iowa, Mrs. H.D. Frarry Auburn, Nebraska, Mr. N.F. Smith, Los Angeles, Calif., Charles H. Riley, Amos and Ray Groves all of Nebraska City. One daughter is deceased.
Funeral services in this city were held Friday afternoon at the home of his son, Charles.
