Delbert L. Koenig, 81, of Whiting died Monday, July 16, 2012, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, UCC in Whiting, with the Rev. Reva Karstens officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Root Funeral Home in Onawa.

Delbert Louis Koenig, son of Louis Anton and Maye Ann (Rank) Koenig, was born on June 20, 1931, in Whiting. Delbert was raised near Whiting and he attended Whiting Public School and graduated from Whiting High School in 1949. Following graduation, he took over the family farm from his dad who passed away suddenly while Delbert was still in high school.

On Jan. 20, 1952, Delbert was united in marriage to Esther Christine Dietrich in Holly Springs, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Carol, Louise, Paul, Kay and Dale. Delbert and Esther continued to farm until the late 1980s, when he started driving truck for King Transfer. Delbert drove for one year then started team driving with Esther. They drove together for several years and worked for King Transfer, Weinrich in Hinton, Iowa, and Consumers in Sioux City. In recent years, Delbert worked as security guard at Tyson Foods in Dakota City.

Delbert was an active member of First Congregational Church, UCC in Whiting. He enjoyed singing with the church choir and had served on the church council. He was a member of Weston Lodge 562 A.F. & A.M. in Whiting, where he had been a past Master and a member of the Scottish Rite in Sioux City. Delbert was a 50-year member of all these organizations. Delbert enjoyed horses, motorcycles, family vacations and singing. Most of all, Delbert enjoyed being with family and taking the grandkids with him and Esther on truck trips.

Delbert is survived by his children, Carol and husband, Dale Verrill of Arboles, Colo., Louise and husband, Walter McCall of Castana, Iowa, Paul and wife, Janet Koenig of Omaha, Kay and husband, Lowell Ross of Whiting, and Dale and wife, Ela Koenig of Rittman, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eunice and husband, Al Jones of Powersite, Mo., and Luella Steinhoff of Onawa, Iowa; four sisters-in-law, Agnes Grice of Fox Lake, Ill., Jane and husband, Brian Goldsmith of Treynor, Iowa, Ellen and husband, Mark Murphy of Cresco, Iowa, and Sylvia Dietrich of Hornick, Iowa; one brother-in-law, John Dietrich of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Esther on April 1, 2010; one son-in-law, Robert Mercure; two sisters, Thelma Koenig and Ethel and husband, Charles Tippens; one sister-in-law, Joyce Dietrich; and three brothers-in-law, Wayne Steinhoff, Calvin Grice and Robert Dietrich.
