Robert R. “Bob” Cogdill 1926-2012

Robert R. “Bob” Cogdill, 86, of Onawa passed away on July 8, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. today at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with Tim Paul officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. until service time today at the funeral home.

Bob was born on June 1, 1926, in Gasconade, Mo., the son of Melvin and Mary (Jeffries) Cogdill. He graduated from high school in Brownville, Neb., where he lived with Mr. and Mrs. Alden. Bob then worked various jobs in many different places, including cleaning barns and working with horses in Omaha, working with Alcoa in Vancouver, Wash., working on the Missouri River with his father, and farming with his uncle in Missouri.

Bob was united in marriage to Joyce N. Taylor on Oct. 21, 1944, in Onawa. To this union, two sons were born. Bob then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in Europe during World War II and then in Okinawa, Japan, during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the military, Bob returned home to Onawa where he worked at Green Gables, Spencer Construction, and Onawa Propane. Later, he and Bob Burgess formed their own construction company.

Bob was a member of the American Legion Grimsley Thayer Post in Castana, Iowa.

Bob is survived by two sons, Robert L. (Elaine) Cogdill of Sioux City, and Earl (Juli) Cogdill of Grand Junction, Colo.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Chad (Robbin) Cogdill and their children, Grant and Blake of Delta, Colo., Loyd (Kelly) Cogdill and their children, Jessica and Taylor of Sioux City, Niki (Ben) Maestas and their son, Ben Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., Todd (Barbara) Cogdill and their son, Cedric of Sioux City, Danielle (Scott) Rizzo and their son, Mason of Louisville, Ky., and Josh Henrikson and Gina Warren and their son, Julius of Eugene, Ore.; two brothers, Steve (Barb) Cogdill of Sioux City, and Glenn (Sheila) Cogdill of Long Beach, Calif.; and four sisters, Linda Miller of Gold Hill, Ore., Marlene Howard of Merino, Colo., Judy Smith of Parker, Colo., and Sandy Zalaco of Buena Park, Calif..

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce; a brother, Ray Cogdill; and a sister, Reva Harder.
