Wilbur Phipps, 97, of Onawa died Monday, June 25, 2012, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Barb Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Root Funeral Home (formerly Pearson Chapel) in Onawa.

Wilbur Phipps, the son of Fred and Ida (McGee) Phipps, was born on Dec. 21, 1914, in Ashton Township, Monona County, Iowa. Wilbur was raised in Monona County and attended McNeil Country School. Following school, Wilbur worked on the farm and then was inducted into the U.S. Army for a short time until being honorably discharged.

On April 11, 1945, Wilbur was united in marriage to Helen Steen in Sioux City. In 1945, Wilbur started working at Berry Lumber in Onawa and continued until his retirement in 1986. Helen passed away on Sept. 11, 1999, and Wilbur continued to make his home in Onawa.

Wilbur was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa and enjoyed ushering for Sunday services. He loved people and enjoyed having them come to his home to socialize.

Wilbur is survived by one sister, Dorothy Markley of Spencer, Iowa; nieces, Janice Wigen of Hurst, Texas, Patricia and husband, Miles Streufert of Mexia, Ala.; nephews, Keith McCall and wife, Christine of Fort Worth, Texas, and Dr. Guy Markley and wife, Judy of Polk City, Fla.; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; sister, Winifred McCall; brother, Ola; and brother-in-law, Archie Steen.

Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa.
