Wilma May (Tadlock) Kafton 1915-2012

Wilma M. Kafton, 96, of Mapleton died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Rev. Donald Studley officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Wilma May (Tadlock) Kafton was born May 11, 1915, on a farm four and one-half miles west of Mapleton in Monona County, the daughter of Stephen Timothy "Tim" Tadlock and May (Jackson) Tadlock. Wilma was baptized in St. John's Methodist Church as a small child and graduated from Mapleton High School with the Class of 1934.

Wilma married her high school sweetheart, Herluf Frands Kafton, on Jan. 23, 1937, and they farmed west of Mapleton until Herluf retired. Herluf passed away in 1992. To this union, four children were born, Arlene, Wayne, Arvin and Judy.

Wilma belonged to St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton. She held different offices on the church council and was a Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years. She was Sunday school superintendent, taught vacation Bible school, held different offices in women's fellowship and was a 4-H leader. Wilma and Herluf were church youth leaders. They also enjoyed playing cards and dancing. She enjoyed going to the Senior Center for meals. She especially enjoyed her family and was very proud of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Those survivors left to cherish Wilma's memory include two sons, Wayne (Zola) Kafton and Arvin (Carole) Kafton, all of Mapleton; one daughter, Judy (Jim) Moore of Fort Collins, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and spouses; 38 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Zelma Kafton of Mapleton; and many other relatives and friends.

Along with her beloved husband, Herluf, Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; a special uncle, Tilden Tadlock; a daughter, Arlene Woodward, and son-in-law, Lyle Woodward; two brothers, Floyd Tadlock and Leonard Tadlock; two sisters, Esther Reinbold Lent and Ethel Van Vlack; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Wilma's name to St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton
