Fred E. Barber Taken By Death

Real Smithland Pioneer Is Buried Sunday in Grant Cemetery Near Rodney

Funeral services for Fred E. Barber, 83-year-old prominent Smithland pioneer who passed away Friday morning in the home of his son, Paul Barber, in Sioux City, were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church at Smithland. Rev. E. J. Gachenhelmer of Sioux City officiated.

Interment was in Grant cemetery near Rodney under the direction of the McVay Funeral home of Whiting. B. F. Brown, L. W. Cleveland, Harley Slentz, M. W Adams, G. E. Wendel and L. S. Gamb served as pallbearers. John H. Bale, Fred Cory, Miss Gertrude Bale and Miss Wilma Johnson sang. They were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Pearl Adams,

Mr. Barber was born September 29, 1857, at Maysville, O., and came West with his parents in 1868, settling near Ticonic, la., on the line between Woodbury and Monona counties. After Mr. Barber began to farm for himself, he also took a position as school teacher and taught classes in the two counties for 27 years.

He was an active member of the Little Sioux Valley Old Settlers organization and attended most of the group's meetings. He was a director of the Sioux Valley Savings bank of Smithland and an elder in the Seventh Day Adventist church at Smithland. He held the position of supervisor and assessor of Grant Township in Monona County for many years. He was married to Miss Alice Newton April 3, 1885.

Mr. Barber made his home in Sioux City since the death of his wife in their home at Smithland
February 27, 1941.

He is survived by two sons , Paul L. Barber and Ned Barber of Sioux City, and two daughters , Mrs. Chet Hawk of Ticonic and Mrs. Etta Cloake of Susanville, Cal. He also is survived by three brothers, Newt Barber of National City, Cal., Frank Barber of LaPorte, Ind., and Ike Barber of Smithland, one sister, Mrs. Nina Bauman of Smithland and four grandchildren.
