Harold G. Porter, 71, of Mapleton passed away peacefully at his home with his children and wife at his side on Monday, June 13, 2011. Harold struggled with lung cancer and fought a good fight for two years.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with the Rev. Kurt Seboe officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Harold Gene Porter was born Oct. 1, 1939, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Francis and Wilma (Bryant) Porter. He was baptized at United Church of Christ in Mapleton and was a resident of Mapleton for 50 years. Harold and his brothers attended various schools in the immediate area of Onawa and Schleswig, Iowa.

Harold was married to Shirley Callaghan on May 26, 1957, and to this union they were blessed with four children, Ann, Barb, Chuck and Daniel. After Shirley's death in 1989, he was united in marriage to Sharon Underwood on July 2, 1994. He had been employed with Westendorf for 13 years, the town of Mapleton as a police officer and on the city crew for 10 years and lastly for the Monona County Shed for 31 years. He retired from Monona County in 2001.

In his younger days he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and going dancing to country music. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed being campground hosts.

Harold was survived by his second wife, Sharon; his children, Daniel (Ashley) Porter and Chuck (Angela) Porter, Ann (David) Schmidt, all of Mapleton, and Barb (Daryl) Pedersen of Denison, Iowa; grandchildren, Stacey (Ben) Brown, Kurt (Sarah) Schmidt, Paytin and Avary Porter, all of Mapleton, Quinlynn Porter of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Justin Porter of Seattle, Wash., Aleesha Porter of Mapleton, Brandon Pedersen of Carroll Stream, Ill., Dolly Pedersen of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kayla (Ryan) Morgan of Schleswig; great-grandchildren, Shayla and Talon Brown, Paige and Troy Schmidt, all of Mapleton, and Lylian and Brody Morgan of Schleswig; brothers, Ray (Roanne) Porter of Sloan, Iowa, and Richard (Dorothy) Porter of Lake View, Iowa; stepchildren, Danielle Lammers of Omaha, and daughters, Briana and Brittney, Toni (Misty) Underwood of Omaha, and children, Drew, Chandler, and Tristen.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley; and his parents.
