Larry E. Woodward, 62, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Castana, passed away June 25, 2011, at the Veterans Hospital in Houston after a seven-month battle with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton, with military honors provided by the American Legion of Loren Holllister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Larry was born June 10, 1949, in Onawa, Iowa, son of Everett and Mary (Nagel) Woodward. He attended Castana Community Grade School, graduating from Maple Valley High School in 1967. In the fall of 1967, he enrolled in the veterinary program at Iowa State University, but was interrupted when Uncle Sam called him to duty. Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 7, 1969, and was honorably discharged on May 6, 1971.

On Jan. 3, 1970, Larry and Jeanne Morgan were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. To this union their son, Jason, was born. Although they later divorced, they remained best of friends, often vacationing together and taking several cruises.

Larry's greatest enjoyment was vacationing in Omaha, watching his grandson play socccer and baseball and playing golf with Jason and Tyler.

Larry worked for Cowboy Truck and Leasing in Houston for more than 30 years as a diesel mechanic and OTR driver.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son and family, Jason, Julie and his best buddy, grandson Tyler "TJ" of Omaha; his mother, Mary Woodward of Mapleton; his siblings, Sharon and Mike Clayton of Salix, Roger Woodward and Connie Sheer of Mapleton, Harold "Harry" and Jackie Woodward of Battle Creek, Iowa, Bernie Woodward of Rodney, Iowa, Karla and David McGrain of Mapleton, Kristi and Brice Bollin of Anthon, Iowa, and Helen Bleil of Rodney; nieces, nephews and families, Darren and Julie Clayton, Carl, Emily, Jack and Charlie Clayton, Steve and Kris Clayton, Alex, Jase and Taylor, Tracey and Rod Lindblom and Payton, Heath Woodward, Heather Groth, Taylor and Jackson, Cole Rhea, Phil, Lindsey and Abby McGrain, Kelly, Terry, Brett, James and Jared Weaver, Randi, Chad and Mia Uhl and Kayla Bleil; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is also survived by his long time friend, Mike Mareau of Sloan; and his Texas family and special friend, Susie Crabtree, Jay and Kim Weda, June Cupit, Jerry, Jr. and Trini Cupit, Greg Cupit and Larry Cupit.

He is preceded in death by his father, Everett; his best friend and former wife, Jeanne; and his grandparents, Karl and Evelyn Nagel and Russell and Blanche Woodward and Jerry Cupit, Sr., part of Larry's Texas family.
