September 11, 2011MAPLETON, Iowa -- Lola E. Vander Naald, 100, of Mapleton passed away Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officating. Burial will be in Liston Township Cemetery at Danbury, Iowa. Visitation will begin 4 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Lola Emma Vander Naald was born to Louis and Lillian (Hartleben) Otto in Mapleton. She attended country school and graduated from Danbury Public School in 1928. She was the last surviving member of her class.
She attended Iowa State University in Ames and Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught school for a year before marrying Paul Durst in 1932. The couple lived on a farm near Danbury and barely survived the 1930s droughts. They had a son, William.
Upon Paul's death, Lola returned to college, attaining a degree in education at the age of 50. She taught in Ute, Mapleton and Sioux City before retiring in 1971. In that same year she married Bert Vander Naald. He passed away in 1987.
Lola lived life to the fullest and thrived on keeping up with the latest news both locally and around the world. She loved butterflies, birds and flowers. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards especially Bridge, dancing, traveling and reading. She treasured time with her family.
Survivors left to cherish their memories of Lola include her son, Bill and Margaret Durst of Clive, Iowa; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bette Koenigs of Mapleton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Lillian; her husbands, Paul and Bert; and her sister, Lela.
