September 07, 2011TURIN, Iowa -- Christopher "Chris" Mathison, 58, Turin, passed away Sept. 4, 2011, in a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa, with John Sears, minister officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery, Turin. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Chris was born Nov. 4, 1952, in Onawa, the son of William "Cornie" and Joyce Eleanor (Mikkelson) Mathison. He was raised in the Turin area and graduated at West Monona High School with the class of 1971. He attended Iowa Western College in Clarinda, Iowa and was then a lifelong farmer at Turin.
Chris and Virginia Thompson were united in marriage May 9, 1975, at First Christian Church in Onawa. They made their home and raised their two sons in rural Turin. Chris also drove school bus for West Monona School District for many years.
He was affiliated with First Christian Church in Onawa. Chris was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed golf, tennis, softball and water skiing.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Turin; two sons, Matt and his fiancee, Jodi Jacoby of Mapleton, Iowa, and Jesse of Turin; three grandchildren, Reese and Austin Petersen and Gracee Mathison; a sister and her husband, Cheri and Jack Gibler of Turin; nieces and nephews, Terah Stoll, Tiffany Campbell and Jared Gibler; an aunt, Ruth Mikkelson of Turin; brothers-in-law, Terry (Maureen) Thompson of Cleve, Iowa, Bill (Carol) Thompson of Sioux City, Randy Thompson of Onawa, and Elaine (Wayne) Carlson of Onawa; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Lintin of Onawa, Marsha Neldeberg of Onawa and Norma Jean Jump of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and a special friend, Kim "Kimbo" Ketelsen of Turin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William Casey Mathison; father and mother-in-law, Glen and Frances Thompson; sister-in-law, Sherry Thompson; and brothers-in-law, John Neldeberg and John Linton.
