TURIN, Iowa -- Robert "Bob" Maule, 90, of Turin died Monday, March 19, 2012, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with Masonic rites at 7 p.m. conducted by the Vesper Lodge 223 A.F. & A.M. with Steve Jewett as orator, at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa. Condolences may be left for the family at www.rushfamilycareservice.com.

Bob was born on Feb. 6, 1922, in rural Onawa, the son of Charles and Jenny (MacElroy) Maule. He graduated from the Onawa High School in 1940.

Bob and Margaret Hathaway were united in marriage on April 25, 1941, at the Hathaway home north of Turin. Shortly after marriage, the couple moved to Utah where Bob began working in carpentry for three years. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. During this service, he witnessed Pearl Harbor the day after the attack by the Japanese and was on board a nearby ship at Iwo Jima when they raised the flag on Feb. 23, 1945. He then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his war service, Bob worked in Ogden, Utah, as a building contractor. Bob and Margaret moved back home to Turin in 1951 to work on the family farm.

Bob was a member of Hillcrest Lodge AF & AM in Castana, Iowa, prior to its consolidation with Vesper Lodge AF & AM in Onawa. He was a member of the Sioux City Consistory and Queen Esther Chapter 222 OES in Onawa for more than 50 years. He served as a Monona County special deputy for several years. Bob enjoyed dancing with his wife throughout their marriage, and was an accomplished organist, having taught himself to play at a young age. He shared his love of music at area nursing homes over the years.

Bob is survived by his wife, Margaret Maule of Onawa; five children, Judy (Larry) Sessions of Onawa, Terry (Jim) Dehn-Volberding of Henderson, Nev., Emilie (James) Anderson of Missoula, Mont., Scott (Rachel) Maule of Turin, and Dave (Amy) Maule of Turin; 13 grandchildren, Ian (Lisa), Ryan, David, Clint, Heather, Brady (Stacy), Tera (Ben), Carson, Alex, Mckenzie, Zach, Sam, and Sara; one great-grandchild, Chaz; numerous nieces and nephews; and very special friends, John and Jamie Fister.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Inez DeSomer and Lois Beedle; and one brother, Elroy Maule.
