February 22, 2012CASTANA, Iowa -- Rosetta Margaret Block, 87, of Castana passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Castana Community Church, with the Revs. Linda Boggs and Harvey Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Castana. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Rosie was born April 25, 1924, on the family farm in Castana, the daughter of Arthur and Agnes (Ultch) Davis. She grew up in the Castana area and lived there her whole life. She attended country school through the eighth grade and helped on the family farm throughout her childhood.
Rosie and Charles Merritt Sr. were united in marriage and had four children. Charles passed away on March 23, 1961. Later, Rosie married Herman Block. The couple made their home and raised their combined nine children in the Castana area. They made their living in the area by farming and operating a pumping service. When her children were young, she worked with the school lunch program at Castana Community School.
Rosie was a very active member of Castana Community Church, where she served on the Ladies' Aid. She was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of the Red Hatters of Mapleton, Iowa. She devoted her time as a hospice volunteer for more than 14 years.
Survivors include three children, Kay Mauch and special friend, Richard Poole, Nancy Merritt, and Charles (Lisa) Merritt, all of Castana; one daughter-in-law, Petrina Merritt of Onawa; five stepchildren, John (Evie) Block of Florida, Marjorie (Bob) Watson of Sedalia, Mo., Mike (Suzanne) Block of Seattle, Wash., Cheryl Block-Brown of Washington, and Patricia Kroeger of Washington; nine grandchildren; 17 stepgrandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; eight great-stepgrandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Roger (Joyce) Davis of Ida Grove, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Pat Davis of Marion, Iowa, and Rosie Davis of Overton, Neb. She also had a brother, Wilbur Davis.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Charles Merritt Sr. and Herman Block; a son, Richard Merritt; a grandson, Andrew Merritt; a stepgrandson, Johnny Block; a son-in-law, Floyd Mauch Sr.; a sister, Elsie Fritz; and two brothers, Clarence Davis and Leonard Davis.
