10 July 2011SOLDIER, Iowa - Leonard Powell, 83, of Soldier died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Willow Dale Wellness Village in Battle Creek, Iowa.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Community United Church of Christ in Castana, Iowa, with the Rev. Harvey Hanson officiating. Interment will be in Liston Township Cemetery at Danbury, Iowa.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Leonard Leo Powell of Soldier, Iowa, was born on July 10, 1927, to Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Wilhelmina Winneke) Powell in rural Monona County. He went to school in Mapleton. In February of 1950, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Hartleben. They had three children, Vicky, Randy and William. He was employed by various farmers in the Battle Creek, Iowa, area and also did other jobs. Marilyn died in 1974.
On Jan. 21, 1984, Leonard married Leona Bell and accepted her children, Edward, Gerald, Stephen and Dixie as his own. They lived on the acreage and raised hogs. They also mowed two cemeteries for several years, hoed beans and worked on the acreage.
He attended UMW Ladies Aide gatherings and helped Leona clean up afterwards, both at the United Church of Christ in Castana, and at the Mapleton Methodist Church. He immensely enjoyed family get-togethers, going to dances and playing horseshoes.
Family members left to cherish Leonard's memory include his wife, Leona of Soldier; his children, Vicky Powell of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Randy Powell of Cody, Wyo.; his stepchildren, Edward (Judy) Bell of Ormsby, Minn., Gerald (Karen) Bell of Hawarden, Iowa, Stephen (Sheila) Bell of Ute, Iowa, and Dixie (Jim) Peters of Mapleton, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Olson of Colorado; a brother, Francis (Vera Mae) Powell of Sioux City; and other family members and friends.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bernard, Cecil and Lawrence; his first wife, Marilyn; and his son, Bill.
