VELMA BAKER

Velma J. Baker, age 88, of Mapleton, died Monday, February 14, 1994, at Maple Heights Nursing Home.

Services were held 2:00 p.m. Friday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Charles Adams officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Karen Krusen was the organist for the service and Sharon Kruse, the soloist. She sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In The Garden.”

Mrs. Baker was born April 7, 1905, at Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Julius and Johanns (Becker) Petersen. She was the youngest of 7 children. She married Frank Jensen April 23, 1923. They farmed south of Mapleton until his health caused them to moved to Onawa, Iowa. Frank died in 1944. Velma married Stanley Baker, July 12, 1961. They farmed near Schleswig, Iowa, later moving into Schleswig where he died March 22, 1983. One year later, Velma moved to Maple Crest Apts in Mapleton and later to Maple Heights Nursing Home where she died.

She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons, Marvin Jensen and his wife Elaine of Delta, Utah, Vern Jensen and his wife, Laura of Omaha, Nebraska, and Roger Jensen, of Spokane, Washington; 3 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 5 step grandchildren; 15 step great grandchildren; and 15 step great great grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, Velma was preceded in death by her parents, 5 sisters and one brother.

Pallbearers were Don Ladwig, Raymond Else, Orville Nathlich, Louis Kuehl, Gary Thies and Robert Rossow.

Arrangements were made by the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
