ESTHER BEHRENDSEN

Esther Behrendsen, age 73, of Mapleton, died Sunday, September 11, 1994, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services were held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Charles Adams officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute, Iowa. Laura Adams was the organist for the services and Sharon Kruse, soloist, sang “How Great Thou Art” and the congregation sang “Rock of Ages.” A prayer service was held on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Walter-Armstrong Chapel, Mapleton.

Esther Marie Behrendsen was born February 18, 1921, on a farm southeast of Ute, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Marie (Seils) Klaus. She was raided in the Ute community. She married Charles Behrendsen May 12, 1940, in Ute. The couple lived most of their married lives on a farm near Mapleton where they raised a family of 10 children. Later they retired and moved to Mapleton where they have lived for the last 20 years.

Esther was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, the LCW and was a past Sunday School teacher. Her hobbies included embroidering, sewing, and gardening. She also loved to coo for her children along with a love for kids and her babysitting.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; six sons, Ronald and his wife, Janet of Council Bluffs, Kenneth of Mapleton, David and his wife, Sandy of Mapleton, Steven of Crescent Iowa, Myron and his wife, Gina of Chandler, Arizona, and Tom of Omaha; four daughters, Joyce and her husband, John Spracklin of Council Bluffs, Patricia and her husband, Darold Evers of Denison, Sheryl and her husband, Donald Howard and Bonnie Behrendsen, all of Omaha; five sisters, Helen Boettger of Denison, Leona and her husband, Phillip Goslar of Ute, Agnes and Max “Keith” Goodner of Harlan, Delores and her husband, Wayne Stephenson of Ute, and Lucille and her husband, Ralph Kruse of Denison; 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Irven Klaus; and one granddaughter, Sharon.

Honorary pallbearers were grandsons, Dustin Behrendsen, Isaac Campbell, Jason Behrendsen, Brad Howard, Brian Howard, and Chad Behrendsen.

Pallbearers were Jeff Behrendsen, Wayne Stephenson, Russell Wray, Lee Behrendsen, Ralph Kruse and Max “Keith” Goodner.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
