Charles A. "Chuck" Ulven 1938-2011

SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Charles A. "Chuck" Ulven, 72, of Whiting, Iowa, formerly of Smithland, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Charles Ulven, son of Earl and Alma (O'Connor) Ulven, was born July 6, 1938, in Sioux City. He was raised and attended school in the Castana, Iowa, area.

On Oct. 11, 1958, he married Sarah Mead in South Sioux City. To this union two sons were born, Clark and Dennis "Dewey" Ulven. They made their home in the Mapleton, Iowa, and Smithland area.

He was employed at Mac's Chevrolet in Mapleton for several years. He then owned and operated Chuck's Body Shop in Smithland until an injury forced him to retire in 1991.

Chuck enjoyed his family, especially his grandkids, playing cards and his horses.

He is survived by Sarah; his two sons, Clark of Sioux City and Dewey of Salix, Iowa; five grandsons and one granddaughter, Anthony "Tony" of Arkansas, Christopher, Joseph and Rachel Mae Ulven of Sioux City and Zachariah and Jacob Ulven of Salix; a great-grandson, Charles Edward Ulven of Arkansas; aunts, uncles, cousins and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal and maternal grandparents; an infant son; a brother, Dennis; and his little buddy, Jake.
