MAPLETON, Iowa -- Virgil M. Bruhn, 79, of Mapleton died Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Hope Cemetery at Mapleton, with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Virgil Milroy Bruhn was born March 13, 1932, at home near Ricketts, Iowa, the son of Louis and Garnet (Ernst) Bruhn. He grew up in the Ricketts area, attending school there. At an early age, he joined his father in farming. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.

On June 3, 1956, Virgil was united in marriage to Evelyn Hein at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Charter Oak, Iowa. To this union four daughters were born. Virgil's work remained in farming until 1996, when they moved into Mapleton. Over the years he also worked at the Mapleton Sale Barn. Evelyn passed away Nov. 24, 2000. Virgil became a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home in June 2001, a place he truly considered to be his home.

Virgil was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He loved to visit and was known to be very clear about his thoughts in the comments he made. In recent years, Virgil loved to ride with his daughter, Carol, to Harlan, Iowa, where she picked up freight for her business. The two would stop to eat breakfast and travel to the store in Ida Grove, Iowa, and back to the Mapleton location. Carol and her sisters smile when she tells of the new details learned about her father's history during these journeys.

Survivors left to cherish their happy memories of Virgil include his daughters and their husbands, Romanza "Rosie" and Matt Petersen of Anthon, Iowa, Helen and Dwight Jenkins of Hornick, Iowa, Jeanette and Mike Swenson of Bellevue, Neb., and Carol and Jerry Koenigs of Mapleton; eight grandchildren, Andrew Petersen and his wife, Courtney, Adam Petersen, Jennifer Cooper and her husband, Scott, Eric Jenkins, Jennifer Dayhoff and her husband, Dustin, Mark Koenigs and his wife, Tami, Maggie Koenigs and Morgan Koenigs; four great-grandchildren, Caleb and Chloe Cooper and Drake and Benjamin Dayhoff; two brothers and their wives, Curtis and Margie Bruhn of Denison, Iowa, and David and Susan Bruhn of Ricketts, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Wayne Harmening.

Along with his beloved wife, Evelyn, Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Harmening; and one infant brother.
