Frances Whiting Allen, 80, Onawa, Iowa died Monday, April 12, 1993, at Elmwood Nursing Home in Onawa after a long illness of cancer.

She was born December 31, 1912, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Willard and Lulu (Bishop) Whiting. She was raised at Whiting and graduated from Whiting High School. She attended Rockford College at Rockford, Ill. and the University of Arizona. She worked for the Federal Housing Commission from 1939 to 1943. On March 17, 1943, she married Sewell E. Allen in Washington, D.C. They returned to Onawa after their marriage where she was office manager for the Allen and Allen Law Firm. She had worked at the Monona County assessors and auditors offices, the ASC, and was the Onawa postmistress from January 1963 through August 1965.Mr. Allen died June 28, 1975 in Onawa.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, past president of the Onawa Women’s Club, past secretary of the Onawa Country Club and past chairperson of Monona County Cancer Society.

Survivors include; one son, Stephen W. Allen and his fiancée, Gina, of Onawa, a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Ellyson ‘Lisa”) Reinhardt of Minnetonka, MN; five grandchildren, Thomas Allen and his wife, Melissa, of Wichita, Ks and Anthony Allen of Onawa, Melissa Reinhardt of St. Peter, MN., Rebecca Reinhardt of LaCrosse, Wi and Timothy Reinhardt of Minnetonka; one great-grandson, Christopher, one brother and his wife, Norman and Mary Whiting of Ames; and one sister, Louise Gillespie of Ames.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Elizabeth Schwartz.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 1993, at the United Methodist Church, Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. David H. Wagner officiating. The organist, Mrs. Jack Jordan, played “Because He Lives” for the congregation to sing and the Onawa Women’s Club Choral Group directed by Gary Linder and accompanied by Mrs. Jim Stangel sang, “The Way We Were” and “Beautiful Savior.”

Casket bearers were Kenneth Stangel, Robert Stangel, John Fister, William Samson, Gary Taylor and Ben Dunham.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa with arrangements by Pearson Home, Onawa, Iowa.

Memorials have been established in her name with the American Cancer Society and the Onawa Public Library.
