MAPLETON, Iowa -- Howard A. Shol, 81, of Mapleton passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley, Moorhead, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Howard Allen Shol was born March 8, 1929, in Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Leone (Stolley) and Elmer Shol. He was raised in Moorhead.

He was married to and had four children with Twila Lund. He became a farmer and auctioneer for the Moorhead Livestock Auction until 1962, when he and his family moved to Mapleton. There, he owned and operated the Mapleton Livestock Auction until 1970. On an annual basis, he would make a pilgrimage to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Missoula, Mont., and purchase their cattle. He then would transport the cattle by train on the Milwaukee Railroad to Mapleton for sale to the farmers in the surrounding communities. In his collateral duties, he served as justice of the peace in Mapleton. He then owned and operated the Council Bluffs Livestock Auction Company until 1975, when he returned to the hills of Monona County, Iowa. From 1975 to 1995, he farmed and did carpentry work in the Castana, Iowa, area before retiring to Mapleton.

He is survived by four children, Jody Rozbicki and her husband, Dr. Michael of St. Louis, Mo., Sandy Heilman of Salix, Iowa, Dr. Wade Shol and his wife, Laura of Spring, Texas, and Lisa Landers and her husband, John of Omaha; his siblings, Ronald Shol and his wife, Colleen, Robert Shol, Darlene Bower and her husband, Daryl and Bernadine Hansen, all of Moorhead, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Melynda Waite and Hugh Heilman of Salix, Carla Kloeckner, Stephanie Underwood and Jacob Landers of Omaha, and Ian and Susan Shol of Spring, Texas; and six great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, George Heilman.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Loess Hill Hospitality Association, P.O. Box 51, Moorhead, IA. 51558.
