SOLDIER, Iowa -- James L. Severson, 78, of Soldier passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb., surrounded by his loving family.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, with the Rev. Carla Johnsen officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service at Onawa, Iowa.

James was born on the family farm on June 26, 1932 in Soldier, Iowa, the son of Roy and Grace (Jones) Severson. He graduated from Soldier High School in 1950 and furthered his education at Iowa State University where he earned a bachelor of science degree in farm operations in 1955.

James and Mary Helen Kalskett were united in marriage on Aug. 8, 1954 at Soldier. Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 as a lieutenant in the 4th Field Artillery Pack Unit, which was the last mule combat unit in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he lived and farmed near Soldier on a Century Farm, which was established by his family in 1867.

He was a lifelong member of the Soldier Lutheran Church, where he had served on the church council and the Worship Committee. He also served as president of the East Monona School Board; president of Soldier Valley Savings Bank and on the county zoning commission. In his retirement, Jim enjoyed visiting his son and his family in Arizona, golfing, playing cards, attending the local coffee hour in town, spending time with his family and friends and following Iowa State sports. Jim's family will remember him as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Helen Severson of Soldier; three children, Doug Severson and his wife, Kristin of Phoenix, Ariz., Matt Severson of Omaha, Neb., and Sara (Severson) Price and her husband, Mike of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Nicole Severson of Phoenix, and Curtis Severson and his wife, Kristen of Sioux City; a great-granddaughter, Ashlyn; two sisters, Donna (Severson) Bebber of Lakeland, Fla., and Patricia (Severson) Vaughn and her husband, Frank of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Jill Vaughn Hall.
