R. Tim Bruning was born June 11, 1939, in Sioux City, to Andrew Francis and Genevieve Ethel (Byrne) Bruning. Due to his father's work as a railroad depot agent, Tim frequently moved in his early childhood. At the age of 10, they settled on a farm near Castana. He then taught high school agriculture and speech for two years.

On July 22, 1961, he was united in marriage to Sue Ann Stockdale in Iowa Falls, Iowa. After resigning from his teaching career, Tim and Sue moved back home to the farm in Castana, where he started his agriculture business as well as farming.

Though his work was important to him, his greatest passion in life was his family, especially the grandkids. Tim was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. He was also a member of the Loess Hills Alliance, where he served as chairman the last three years. He coached Little League ball as well as umpiring and was a supporter of the FFA Program.
