Artimus W. Backer A Former Whiting Citizen Passes Away

Artimus W. Backer, died at his home in Luverne, Minn., Friday, March 21st, being seventy years Old. Mr. Backer had been in failing health for the past year and death was due to a heart ailment. Mr. Backer was born at Liberty, Iowa, December 3, 1870, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Daniel Backer. He moved with his parents in 1875 to Sloan. In 1893 the Backer family moved to Whiting, Iowa. His father was a pioneer doctor of Sloan. Later he and his father owned and operated the Backer Hardware at Whiting. Upon the death of his father he continued in the same business for several years. In 1902 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Smith of Whiting and to this union was born two daughters, Mrs. Beulah Faulk and Mrs. Alice Binford and a son, Robert and all of San Jose, California; who with the wife and two sisters, Mrs. E.T. Sullivan of Whiting, Iowa and Mrs. S.W. Luburgh of Sloan, survive him. Funeral services were conducted at Luverne, Minn., and interment was in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
