Sewell Allen Retires For Rest and is Found Dead.He was to Have Opened Business in Shoshone, Idaho This Week With his Nephew, A W. Ferguson
People of Onawa were greatly shocked on Friday last by the sudden and unexpected death of Sewell A. Allen, a former Onawa resident, who with his family has been visiting with his wife’s father, Mr. Mitchell Vincent.
For some months past Mr. Allen had not been in perfect health but had been able to attend to his business. About a month ago he came to Onawa to rest and enjoy a visit with friends and relatives while awaiting business development pending in the west. Soon after arriving he suffered a short illness which confined him to his bed. From this he seemed to recover. Last Friday he was suffering from a severe headache and seemed much oppressed by the heat. In the afternoon while at the residence of his cousin, James C. Pike, he retired to a cool place to sleep. There he was found dead. Death was caused by heart failure.
Mr. Allen, aged 46 years, was born in Oakland, Maine. His father, Dr. Sewell A. Allen was well known in Onawa and was for many years a resident of Sheldon, Iowa. Since coming west, over twenty years ago, Mr. Allen had been engaged in the drug business. For many years he was with Mr. Fletcher Howard, at Sheldon, whose business he and his father purchased. After losing the business by fire Mr. Allen went with the F. Hanson drug company at Sioux City, where he was for a long time in charge of the prescription department. He also traveled for the wholesale department of the same firm.
Twelve years ago Mr. Allen left Sioux City to become traveling salesman for Faxon & Callegar Drug Co., of Kansas City, making his home at Nevada, Missouri. In this capacity he was eminently successful building up a large business for his firm throughout Southwestern Missouri. Last April he gave up his position to enter the retail drug business with his nephew, A.W. Furgeson, of Bridgeport, Conn. At the time of his death details had been completed to take over a business at Shoshone, Idaho, for which place he was to leave this week.
The funeral was held Tuesday from the residence of Mr. Mitchell Vincent. The services at the home and at the grave were in charge of the local Masonic Lodge assisted by Rev. Vinton Lee.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche Vincent Allen and 3 children, Mitchell Vincent Allen, Evans Sewell and Lovisa. Also by one sister, Mrs. Walter B. Ferguson of Bridgeport, Conn. His Onawa relatives include, Mrs. James C. Pike, Mrs. Charles Pike and Mr. Adelbert Howard.
Those who came from out of town to attend the funeral were: Mrs. W.B. Ferguson, Bridgeport, Conn., Mr. and Mrs. John Vincent, Pittsburg, Kansas, Mr. Hobart Vincent of Deadwood, S.D.; Mrs. Eva Pike of Whiting and Dr. and Mrs. C Fred Gould, Sioux City.
