Long Time Resident Of This Locality Dies At Home In Mapleton—Funeral Held SundayJohn J. Albertsen, highly respected citizen of Mapleton, passed away at his home last Thursday afternoon after having been seriously ill for 10 days. Mr. Albertsen was 84 years old.
On March 1, 1925, when in his 81st. year, Mr. Albertsen became ill. His heart had become affected. This meant he must rest much and preserve his strength. This he did, with the result that he was at no time in a serious condition until 10 days before the end. Then he was forced to his bed. His condition gradually grew weaker with complications contributing to his ailment.
John Jacob Albertsen was born at Drelsdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on February 12, 1844. He married Miss Catherine Hansen on October 27, 1878. Four years later they sailed for the United States and settled near Schleswig in Crawford County, Iowa. After working on a farm for some time, Mr. Albertsen engaged in the business for himself. This was his occupation until his final retirement seven years ago.
The family lived in this locality continuously with the exception of a year and one-half, when Mr. and Mrs. Albertsen and their youngest son, Rudolph went to Engle Butte, S.D. where they proved up on a homestead. This was 15 years ago.
Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Albertsen. Gretta, a daughter, died when three years old. Besides his widow, three sons survive. They are; Paul, Herman and Rudolph. There also are three grandchildren; Elizabeth, Loren and Willis Albertsen, children of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Albertsen. A sister, Mrs. Mary Spruch, lives in Chicago.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at St. Peter’s Evangelical church with Rev. William Krummel officiating. Burial was in the Schleswig Cemetery, where their daughter was laid to rest years ago.
Mr. Albertsen was known as an industrious man. The new world beckoned to him in his youth, and he answered the call of opportunity. His willingness to work and to practice frugality were the characteristics of his life. Friends and neighbors liked him, and they share his loss with the widow and sons who survive him.
