ONAWA, Iowa -- Arnetta M. Carpenter, 87, Onawa passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Marcy Mortuary in Ashland, Neb. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Neb. Visitation will be 5 to 7 Sunday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Arnetta was born March 26, 1923, in Greenwood, Neb., the youngest of four children to Gus and Clara (Beyer) Brakage. She was raised in Greenwood and graduated from Greenwood High School.

Arnetta and Kenneth C. Carpenter were united in marriage on Dec. 7, 1941, in Greenwood. The couple lived in Greenwood after Kenneth finished his military duties.

Arnetta was very active with the city of Greenwood. She helped establish the Greenwood Historical Museum and served on the Greenwood city council and Greenwood Library board. She was always ready to volunteer and to help others. She enjoyed sewing and made several baby blankets and quilts for family and friends. Playing cards of all kinds was one of her favorite past times. Her greatest passion was the fall season when the Nebraska football season rolled around. She and Kenneth attended many of the Husker Bowl Games and were season ticket holders for more than 30 years. They became friends with Coach Tom Osborne's parents at these games. The Huskers have lost a very devoted fan.

Survivors include a son, Michael (Sharon) Carpenter of Onawa; two daughters, Carolyn (Larry) Sharp of Norcross, Ga., and Marilyn (Steve) McClatchey of Greenwood; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenneth C. Carpenter, one sister, Gertrude Stewart and two brothers, Harold and Walter Brakhage.
