ONAWA, Iowa -- Maxine L. Andersen, 85, Onawa Iowa passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with the Rev. Matthew Sperling officiating. Graveside services will be at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday in Obert Cemetery at Obert, Neb. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Friday, with the family present noon to 1 p.m., at the funeral home.

Maxine Loretta was born Sept. 1, 1924, at St. Helena, Neb., the daughter of Jessie and Hazel (Herring) Meng. After graduation from Yankton (S.D.) High School, she entered Wayne State College and received a bachelor's degree in education. In her teaching career, she taught in both country and elementary schools in Nebraska.

Maxine and Lawrence Barnhart Andersen were united in marriage March 24, 1945, in St. Helena. The couple farmed in Cedar and Dixon Counties in Nebraska, where they raised their four daughters. Lawrence passed away Nov. 25, 1963, in Dixon County.

Maxine was a member of the Obert Baptist Church. She enjoyed volunteering, attending the Senior Center, reading and needlework.

Survivors include four daughters, Lorraine P. McCoy of Newcastle, Neb., Carolyn S. Carlson of Fremont, Neb., Kathy L. and her husband, Phil Gaukel of Onawa and Pamela R. Knudsen of Allen, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Mugsey.

In addition to her husband, Maxine was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Henry, Alfred and Charles Meng; and a sister, Isabel Branaugh.

Memorials may be donated to the Onawa Senior Center.
