WHITING, Iowa -- Don "Pokey" Croker, 81, of Whiting passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Whiting, with the Rev. Robert Zuhl officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Donald W. Croker was born Aug. 11, 1928, in Whiting, the son of Cutler and Eleanor (Breneman) Croker. He was raised in Whiting and graduated from Whiting High School. He attended Iowa State for two years, before returning to Whiting, where he was a lifelong farmer.

Don and Cloda Holmes were united in marriage on Nov. 7, 1958, at Albaton Wesleyan Church in Albaton, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Whiting area. Cloda passed away May 6, 2008.

He was a member of First Congregational Church, UCC. He served on the board of directors of Burgess Memorial Hospital, the Whiting School Board and the Whiting City Council. He enjoyed being a member of the Whiting community and serving in many capacities. He drove the Whiting school bus a number of years and the students always enjoyed his interest and humor. He was always cheerful and happiness radiated among all those around him.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Brian and Brenda of Whiting and Brent and Kathy of Storm Lake, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Kimberly and Clarence Tompkins of Whiting; four grandchildren, Katelyn, A.J., Kallie and Marcus Croker; two stepgrandsons, Heath and Travis Vanden Bosch; and a sister, Marthena "Teens" Babb of Ocala, Fla.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert.
