11 July 2010ONAWA, Iowa -- Doris M. Pixler, 95, of Onawa passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at Elmwood Care Centre at Onawa.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Onawa United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Angela Gafford Asmus officiating. A private family burial will be later in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service at Onawa.
Doris was born Nov. 24, 1914, at Turin, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Christensen) Thayer. She was raised and educated in the Turin area through the 11th grade and graduated from school at Onawa High School with the class of 1934.
Doris and Lucian "Bud" Pixler were united in marriage on March 3, 1937. They were the parents of one son, Larry. She and her husband retired to Bronson, Iowa, and made their home there for many years. Bud passed away July 5, 1984, at Sioux City. Later, Doris moved to Sioux City, and then to Onawa in 2007. She was employed by the Red Owl Bakery and Palmer House as a professional baker and was well known for her excellent pies.
Doris was a member of the Bronson Birthday Club, Local Teamsters Union and was active in the Senior Center of Sioux City. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sioux City.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Larry and Sheryl Pixler of Whiting, Iowa; a grandson and his wife, Jeffery and Nancy Pixler of Sammamish, Wash.; and four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Melissa, Courtney and Nathan Pixler of Sammamish.
In addition to her husband, Lucian "Bud" Pixler, she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Lewis, Norse, Glenn, William, and Roscoe in infancy; and a sister, Genevieve (Thayer) Bond.
