27 Jan 1995Smithland, Iowa—Margaret J. Smidt, 87, of Whiting, formerly of Smithland, died Tuesday, January 24, 1995, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Smithland with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Willman Funeral Home in Rodney.
Mrs. Smidt was born November 29, 1907, at Forreston, Illinois, the daughter of John J. and Nellie Toomsen. She married Rev. H.A. Smidt August 27, 1930, at Forreston. She helped her husband in the ministry. He died January 11, 1992 in Whiting.
Mrs. Smidt taught Sunday school, catechism and helped in the women’s organizations of the Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Smithland.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Nelia and Anthony Tompkins of Smithland; a son and his wife, Rev H. John and Lavada Smidt of Parker, Colo.; a sister, Carrie Trie of Forreston, Illinois; a brother and his wife, Joel and Ruth Toomsen of Hooppole, Illinois; six grandchildren; a great grandson; two sisters-in-law, Angeline DeVries of Austinville, Iowa and Anna Hoffman of Ackley; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Cornelius and a sister, Freida.
