Death of Mrs. Preston Day

Was One of the Pioneer Women of the Famous Maple River Colony

Castana, Iowa—Feb 9—The death of Mrs. Carolina Elizabeth, wife of Preston Day of this town, removed one of the noble band of Pioneer women of Maple Valley. Mrs. Day was married at Pomprey, NY on July 6, 1862, to Preston Day, a son of Mr. Francis A Day of the Day, Morrison, Elliott colony, who located in this county in 1856, coming here from St Charles, Ill. In her early married life after coming to this county, Mrs. Day practiced medicine for a time at the old town of Arcola, about seven miles east of Onawa and afterwards at Castana, where she lived with her family for the remainder of her life. Mrs. Day was a descendant of revolutionary stock, her ancestry having served in the colonial army in New England.

Mrs. Day id survived by her husband and a son and two daughters, Mrs. Sarah and Nellie Day of Castana, and Frank B, who resides in Idaho. Mr. Day is a brother of J.B.P. and F.A. Day of this place and the uncle of Will T. Day, president of the Castana Savings bank and George P. Day, cashier of the Merchants National Bank of Sioux City. Mrs. Day was aged 66 years, 3 months and 6 days. She was a person highly esteemed by all who knew her and one whose sound and brilliant qualities of mind made her a leader among her sex in pioneer days and of invaluable help to the settlers and their families.
