ONAWA, Iowa -- Irene M. Montag, 82, Onawa died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
A funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010 at St. John's Catholic Church at Onawa. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010 with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary, at Rush Family Care Service at Onawa.
Irene May was born Dec. 6, 1927, at Valparaiso, Neb., the daughter of George E. and Agnes (Vlcan) Stanislav. The family moved to a farm near Blencoe, Iowa, in March 1930. She graduated from Blencoe High School in 1945. She helped care for her parents during their long illness.
Irene and Vincent J. Montag were united in marriage May 25, 1954, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Blencoe. Vincent passed away Dec. 27, 1996, at the V.A. Medical Center in Knoxville, Iowa. Irene took care of many children in her home in Onawa for 28 years, until her retirement from child care in 1995.
She enjoyed working, playing and making things with the children. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Rosary Society in Onawa.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Daniel and Linda Montag of Sioux City; a daughter, Celestina Montag of Omaha; two granddaughters, Jennifer Montag of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Christine Bainbridge of Sioux City; a great-granddaughter, Baylee Bainbridge of Sioux City; three brothers and their wives, Milo and Mary Stanislav of Onawa, Dennis and Edna Mae Stanislav of Little Sioux, Iowa, and Andrew and Lola Stanislav of Omaha; a sister and her husband, JoAnn and Robert Lampe of Omaha; and many close relatives.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents.
