George H. Strunk, Onawa, Iowa passed away at Burgess Memorial Hospital at Onawa on January 25, 1981, following a brief illness. Death came at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 24 days.

He was born at Onawa on April 1, 1904, the son of Herschel and Jenny Thurman Shrunk . On August 25, 1928, he was married to Mildred Cole at Onawa.

George served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Wichita, the Admiral’s Flagship. He was employed for over 30 years by the City of Onawa as an electrician. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 380, David McNeill American Legion Post No. 129 and the VFW all in Onawa.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Onawa, two daughters, Gladys Hansen of Onawa and Mrs. Keith (Joyce) Hall of Whiting, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bertha Marcel of Lafayette, Ind, two sisters, Mrs. Winifred Ponce of South Sioux City, Nebr. and Mrs. Helen Hogancamp of St. Augustine, Fla., eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Lyle Marcel.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 1981, at the United Methodist Church at Onawa with Rev. Herbert Foxworthy officiating. The organist, Mrs. Robert Oehler, played the selections “There’s Something About That Name” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”

Honorary Bearers were Robert Bellis, Ora Townsend, and Ernest Holsclaw. Active Bearers were John Tyson, Everett Sorenson, Merle Mock, Wayne Burgess, Orville Rutledge and Vern McFee.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with Military Flag Presentation by David McNeill American Legion Post No. 129, Onawa, Iowa, Ernest Eckard Commander. Graveside services were conducted by I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 380, Onawa. Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa.
