WHITING, Iowa -- Freddie Delano Gulick, 75, of Whiting passed away Monday evening, Dec. 7, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital with his family surrounding him.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sloan Evangelical Church in Sloan, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Moor officiating. Interment will follow in the Hite Cemetery near Whiting, with military rites offered by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff is in charge of arrangements.

Freddie was born on Dec. 19, 1933, in Whiting, the son of Fred and Goldie Mae (Fletcher) Gulick.

He married Bernadine Ruth Bradley on April 19, 1952, in North Sioux City. Freddie and Bernadine were blessed with eight children. Freddie served his country as a member of the U.S. Army following the Korean War.

Freddie had many skills, a mechanic, truck driver, radio and television repairman, was in the carpentry business with his brother building several homes in the Sioux City Morningside area, and had been a manager of the Lazy W Restaurant in Sloan. He had been in charge of maintenance at Winn-a-Bingo, using his woodworking skills to design and create the bingo tables.

Freddie treasured spending time with his children and grandchildren, enjoyed vegetable gardening, cooking, woodworking, and coffee with family and friends.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include his son, Randy Gulick (Chrystal) of Whiting; five daughters, Tresa Matthews (Lewis) and Penni West (Steve) of Sioux City, Rita Oyler of Whiting, Patty Peterson of Dakota City, and Shawn Sorgdrager (Wayne) of Onawa, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Chris and Megan Matthews, Sandy Sysel, Randy, Michael, and Samantha Gulick, Jason, Justin, and Jared Ritchie, Jordan Peterson, Blake Gulick, Addy and Austin Sorgdrager; four great-grandchildren, Cole and Jack Ritchie and Peyton and Reagan Gulick; a brother, Zane Gulick of Columbus, Neb.; sister, Pat DeJong of Hinton, Iowa; mother-in-law, Margaret Trometer; sister-in-laws, LaVada Jolly (Buford) Janice Dove, Cindy Wilson (Mike), Nancy Bradley; and brother-in-laws, Steve Felix (Pat) and Jerry Felix (Ann).

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine; parents, Fred and Goldie Mae; infant sons, Jimmy Lee and Freddie Delano Jr.; infant granddaughter, Spring; brothers, William and David; sisters, Leta and Olive; and son-in-law, Cubby Olyer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the family to be distributed per their wishes.
